A Study On Value Sensitive Design Of Batya Friedman

Batya Friedman is a Professor in the Information School, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Human-Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington, where she directs the laboratory of Value Sensitive Design.In 2012, she received the SIG-CHI Social Impact Award.She pioneer Value Sensitive Design to insert the values from people in the system of computer and science.Batya Friedman’ Value Sensitive Design emerged in the 1990’s.With technology design,Value Sensitive Design want to extinguish the bad effects caused by technical crafts.During which,ethical values、rules in the society and technology design are combined.Value Sensitive Design embody the values into technology crafts to meet the needs from people. In the study, Friedman’ Value Sensitive Design carried out some typical projects about’computer human interaction’, online informed in Internet, urban simulation and so on.Batya Friedman’ Value Sensitive Design thinks that the factors in and out of the technology crafts should be paid much attention,and the interaction between technology crafts and the factors around them are also important.The inner factors are the rulers in the technology crafts.The factors out of the technology crafts are about the nature and the society.The interaction between technology crafts and the factors connected affects the technology work and the whole world.Batya Friedman’ Value Sensitive Design also carried out the conceptual、empirical and technological methods. The conceptual methods analyze the ethical problems with philosophy.The empirical methods use the statistics to analyze the abstract values.The technological methods are most important and Value Sensitive Design is based on them.Batya Friedman’Value Sensitive Design is useful to the technology development and,philosophy of technology in our country. In other others,Batya Friedman’ Value Sensitive Design makes the technology study become open、energetic and potential. Even though,value Sensitive Design is certainly limited at some levels.For example, how technology design can meet the people in different culture;What should be done to keep technology crafts interacting with values;Many problems still need to be done. After all,Batya Friedman’ Value Sensitive Design is still a new method by which we can get to know the relations among technology practice,human values and other social factors and then we will handle the technology well.
