The rapid growth of economic and speeding up of urbanization lead to the increase of motor vehicles, which is convenient for the travel of the residents, meanwhile, increases the road traffic crashes. Collecting traffic information by using GPS technology has become a hot research topic. This study focuses on the calculation and application of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) based on GPS technology. It utilizes the taxi GPS positioning data of Nanjing for analysis, after data extraction and pre-treatment, it uses map-matching algorithm to restore operation of the vehicle trajectory, and establish mathematical model to calculate VMT. The main works are in the following aspects:Firstly, combining with traffic engineering theory and basic concepts of VMT, it proposes a series of derivative concept of VMT, and provides a theoretical basis of VMT calculation.Secondly, in order to analyze the raw data for the taxi GPS positioning, it proposes a method for processing a taxi GPS data, which can effectively eliminate the data that involving being beyond the research scope, repeating positioning when the vehicle stopped, vehicle location data drift and transition, etc. The data processing is the basis for map matching of vehicle trajectoryThirdly, according to the requirements of VMT calculation, in order to improve map matching of point to a line, it proposes a trajectory map matching method based on road network topological relations, and then designs the algorithm process.Finally, It establishes the single vehicle VMT model, and then calculate the VMT for overall vehicles base on time-space trajectory model and the distance between two points of latitude and longitude. Then, it verifies the validity of the VMT calculation method by mathematical statistics method and analyze the factors contributing to the calculation results. An example analysis of taxi GPS location data of Nanjing is conducted.Summarily, VMT calculation by using GPS location data can provide the basic data support effectively for economic development of the region, transportation planning, traffic safety analysis, environmental assessment, fleet management, and etc.
