With the sustained development of economy, the volume of China’s automobileand highway have leapt to the forefront of the world. However, China’s highwaytraffic accident rate has always been high. According to statistics, the inclementweather is one of the most significant factors to the accident rate. Therefore, toassemble advanced meteorological observation station to each highway sectionequipped is becoming an inevitable tendency. Highway traffic meteorologicalobservation station works upon the highway as a platform, which integrates thetechnology of embedded system, field bus communication technology, sensortechnology and automatic control technology to construct a comprehensive collectionsystem. Acquiring, retrieval data in real-time from meteorological factors on thehighway and security storage and backup provide effective, secure and stable roadweather information for road management departments to facilitate timely managingand dispatching, which greatly reduces the probability of traffic accidents due toinclement weather.In this thesis, the design of highway traffic meteorological observation station isconstructed upon sensor technology and embedded system technology, and adoptsthe international standardized protocol and open design. It’s mainly consists of twoparts of hardware and software. The hardware includes four parts with the collector,the external bus, sensors and peripherals. The software includes embedded operatingsystem and terminal applications. The collector uses an ARM9high speed processorequipped with Linux system as the software platform. Each digital sensor, analogsensor and intelligent sensor is designed respectively accompanied by interfacecircuits. According to the type of acquired data, a database has been designed and anapplication has been developed to manage it. In addition, a designed applicationsoftware realizes real-time monitoring and inquiring to the various meteorologicalfactors on the highway, which is convenient for management of meteorological element data.In this thesis, a highway traffic meteorological observation station design has beenintroduced and a prototype has been made. The prototype test results show that thedesign of the highway traffic meteorological observation station has betterperformance in stability, real-time acquisition, data inquiring etc. Finally for thosedefects that appear during the testing, some ideas and solutions have been introduced.
