In the future high energy physics experiments,higher energy colliders need to be established for the precise measurement of Higgs, such as ILC, CEPC etc, and hadronic calorimeter plays an crucial role in this program. In order to improve jet energy resolution, a high-granularity DHCAL (digital hadronic calorimeter) with PFA has been proposed, of which jet energy resolution can be about 30%/√E, which could separate W and Z.HCAL based on gas detector including GEM/THGEM and RPC is oriented internationally. Currently, technology of producing THGEM is relatively mature domestically, and the THGEM detector could be used for a large area imaging etc due to its advantages of high gain, low cost, robust against discharge and sub-mm spatial resolution. Therefore, a research program of DHCAL based on THGEM detector has been come up.In this paper, we preliminary study the feasibility of HCAL based on THGEM detector. First, we build a small scale model of HCAL with Geant4, and preliminarily make a stand-alone simulation. In the simulation, absorber and sensitive medium of HCAL model are stainless steel iron and Ar/5% CO2 respectively. Meanwhile, we set π+ as the particle source, and then hit the HCAL model directly. Besides, we initially discuss HCAL model energy resolution in several situations:analog or digital read-out, different sizes of read-out cell, single threshold or 3 thresholds, etc. Second, the response of THGEM detector to muon (MIPs) has been researched in the laboratory. Moreover, at the E3 line of the Beijing Test Beam Facility we also study the response of a single layer THGEM detector to p/n+at different momenta. Experiment results show detection efficiencies for μ/π+ are about 90%, and for p is larger than 95%.Based on initial research mentioned-above, DHCAL based on THGEM detector should be respected. Further research including electronics, well-THGEM and full simulation need to be going on.
