Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 is the large st genus of the family Alpheidae. Most Alpheus inhabit marine, shall ow tropical and subtropi cal wat ers, especially in Indo-West Paci fic region, alt hough som e live in warm or cool-temperate waters. The body length of the shrimps is about 10 to 100 millimet ers. Their habit s are various, most of which inhabit on l iving and dead corals, some in tide pools and sm all pockets of water in intert idal sand or muddy-sand, som e in burrows i n sand and muddy substrata, or occasionally under rocks and as symbionts wi th some invert ebrat es,especially anem ones, echinoids, and annelids, and fi shes. Alpheus is one of the dominant animal gr oups of the coral reef comm unities. Most species are im portant benthic crustaceans and play important rol es in the marine ecosystems.Ba sed on about 2000 specimens deposited in the Marine Biological Museum(MBM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a comprehensive resea rch on the tax onomy of the genus Alpheus from China seas was made. The present s tudy reveal ed that there were 66 Alpheus speci es bel onging to 7 groups from Chinese wat ers, i ncluding 16 new recorded species, Alpheus agilis Anker, Hurt & Knowl ton,2009, Alpheus architectus De Man, 1897, Alpheus astri nx Banne r & Ba nner, 1982,Alpheus balaenodigitus Ba nner & Banner, 1982, Alpheus djiboutensis De Man, 1909,Alpheus funaf utensis Borradai le, 1899, Alpheus idiochel es Coutière, 1905, Alpheus labis Banner & Banner, 1982, Alpheus l adronis Banne r, 1956, Alpheus lepidus De Ma n, 190 8, Alph eus lep toc heles Ban ner & Banner, 1975, Alph eus maindroni C out iè re,1898, Alpheus moret ensis Banne r & Ba nner, 1982, Alpheus simus Guérin-Méneville,1855, Alpheus spongiarum Coutière, 1897 and Alpheus tenuicarpus De Man, 1908.C onsulting some papers, there are other 11 Alpheus species distributed in China seas. Therefore, there are 77 Alpheus species in Chinese waters. Detailed morphological descripti ons and illustrations of all species were provided. Keys to Chi nese species were gi ven. Discussions on the m orphological difference were made. All species concer ned in the study are listed as follows: those with an asterisk“*”recorded for the first time from Chines e waters.B revirostris groupAlpheus acut ocarinatus De Man, 1909Alpheus barbatus Cout ière, 1897Alpheus brevicristatus De Haan, 1844Alpheus compressus Ba nner & Banner, 1981Alpheus digitalis De Haan, 1844Alpheus djiboutensis De Man, 1909*Alpheus lepidus De Man, 1908*Alpheus leptocheles Banner & Banne r, 1975*Alpheus macroskeles Alcock & Anderson, 1899Alpheus moretensis Banner & Banner, 1982*Alpheus nonalter Kensl ey, 1969Alpheus pustulosus Banner & Banner, 1968Alpheus rapacida De Man, 1908Alpheus savuensis De Man, 1908Alpheus sibogae De Man, 1908Alpheus tenuicarpus De Man, 1908*Cri nitu s groupAlpheus alcyone De Man, 1902Alpheus brevipes Sti mpson, 1860Alpheus bucephalus C outière, 1905Alpheus eul imene De Man, 1909Alpheus frontali s H.
