As the capital of China, Beijing is one of those cities with many geological disasters. Geological disasters have been disturbing the urban development of Beijing for a long time. The urban geological safety of Beijing is always a key topic for research. With the consideration of its special political status and unique regional geological environment, it is necessary to set up a geological disaster risk assessment system which is applicable to the plain area in Beijing Municipality.Since Beijing is one of those cities where geological disaster risk assessments are carried out early, the theoretical system of the geological disaster risk assessment in mountainous area of Beijing is relatively mature. However, since less work is done in the plain area, the theoretical assessment system is immature. Today, no matter it is at home or abroad, systematic and universal methodology or theory, and it is still at the exploration stage.In this research, the object to be studied is Chaoyang District in Beijing Municipality. With the reference to the existing methodologies and achievements at home and abroad, based on development characteristics and socio-economic conditions of geological disasters in Chaoyang District, a geological disaster risk assessment model is set up targeting at the plain area in Beijing Municipality, and the regionalization of geological disaster risks is done within Chaoyang District in Beijing.In this research, geological disaster risk assessment models such as grey relational analysis are built up. This methodology is applied in an exploratory way to the object studies in this research(i.e. Chaoyang District). By carrying out field investigation and combining existing references on regional geology, disastrous geology, hudrogeology etc., the categorization, distribution, range, level of damage, forming conditions and effects of geological disaster in Chaoyang District are investigated.MAPGIS spatial analysis technique is used analyze the risk regionalization of the following five geological disasters and elaborate characteristics of their regionalization: ground collapse, land subsidence, sand liquefaction, ground fissure and faulted structure. Based on comprehensive investigations, the researcher carries out a comprehensive regionalization assessment of diversified geological disaster risks in Chaoyang District. The entire territory of Chaoyang District locates in geological disasters prone areas which are further divided into three categories(i.e. high, medium and low). A map of geological disaster risk regionalization is then compiled. In the study, an assessment of geological disaster prevention in Chaoyang District is carried out; key geological disaster categories that should be prevented and their regions are defined; a planning graph for the prevention of geological disasters in Chaoyang District is compiled.As an exploratory achievement, the approach, methodology and theoretical system drawn in this research provide a research idea for similar work in the future, and can be used for reference in similar work especially in Beijing.
