In this paper, the influence of the station heights was investigated on the representation of high wind data observed automatically on the islands by contrast test and statistic analysis, and the quality of the corrected high wind data was evaluated by comparing them with the specific measurements. By this way, it is hoped that the real information about high sea winds near the sea area of Yantai could be obtained for guiding the forecasts of high sea winds and serving the development of marine economy.First of all, the availability of island automatic station wind data near the sea area of Yantai was analyzed qualitatively by considering geographical sites and altitudes of different island stations. Based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, the method of correcting wind speed according to the wind profile formula was discussed to determine the impact of altitude. And the availability of data was investigated with the aid of statistically analyzing historical data. In this research, the maximum wind speed on f 142 strong wind days at 11 island stations was compared statistically during October 2008 to July 2010. At the same time, the rose diagrams of wind direction and speed were made for contrast analysis. The result showed that the station height and topography had a direct effect on wind speed in each direction. It’s necessary to select appropriate parameters to obtain the sounding data at 10 m above sea level. And the availability of sounding data in all directions could be determined through contrast analysis.Secondly, the availability of island automatic station wind data was evaluated by comparing them with the specific measurements. For the complex topography and severe weather condition, 3 island automatic stations--Penglai Baxiandu, Danzi island, and Sang island, were selected because they faced the sea at north and were close to the sea surface. For these reasons, the measured wind could represent the northerly wind at sea surface..the contrast test had lasted for 7 months from Nov.2012 to May 2013 with a strong wind speed above 6 level and at the wind directions under different wind speed. Based on the historical data statistics and contrast test analysis, the availability of island station data was evaluated and the degree of available values was determined on each wind direction. The rules and correction methods were presented about using the sea wind observations on the islands near the sea area of Yantai. Finally, the sea strong wind data platform was set up for displaying the correction results for actual monitoring and predicting. According to the above rules, the live data used for the sea strong wind assessment would be redefined, and the live data at the unavailable wind direction would be removed. Our results might help improve the forecast accuracy and service effectiveness. In the meantime, it provided a scientific basis for the site selection of meteorological stations on the islands as well as optimization of stations.
