The handling operation for deep-water marine riser means to remove the risers whichstored on the main deck to the wellhead or carry out this process reversely, it mainly containsthree key process:the convey process of riser,the hoist process of riser and the store process.The handling system for marine riser is an important component of the whole handling systemfor tubular equipment. Foreign companies have done a lot of research work in this field,which leads to the widely use of their products on nearly all offshore drillingplatform,whereas the research of the tubular handling system in our country has just begun.In order to promote the development of deep-water offshore petroleum drilling of our country,it is necessary to start the research of the handling equipment for marine riser.This subject originates from key projects: Deep-water Drilling Rig and Drill PipeAutomated Processing key Technology Research. This paper focus on the design of anautomatic catwalk machine which will be used to handle the horizontally stored marine riser,its main contents are about two aspects as follow:As to the aspect of mechanical structure design: there are several detailed designs ofcatwalk machine’s main body, the rack of catwalk machine, main trolley,the drive system ofmain trolley, pipe handling system and lifting equipment. Besides, this paper also makes anelaborate quantitative analysis for the lift hydraulic cylinder.As for the aspect of hydraulic system design: this paper designs a hydraulic systemwhich apply to the catwalk machine’s mechanical structure. The hydraulic driving system formain trolley, pipe handling equipment and catwalk machine’s travelling mechanism have beendesigned in this paper respectively. Based on these hydraulic driving subsystem this papermakes a whole hydraulic driving system for the catwalk machine.
