Kuohai cooper and polymetallic mine, within the jurisdiction of Xaysomboun District, Vientiane Province, Laos, is tectonically located at the juncture of the north-east trending Luang Prabang structural belt and north-west trending Truong Son structural belt, which is part of the integral Varisian-Indosinian fold belts of intensive magmatic activities. In the same tectonic belts it has found one of the largest porphyry-skarn type gold-copper deposits in Laos-Phu Kham large gold-copper deposit, which has many similarities with this study area of Kuohai in geologic structures magmatic rock features, mineral alteration, ore mineralization and other characteristics, implying good exploration prospects in Kuohai area.Kuohai ore deposit is in emplaced the skarn rocks in and/or near the contact zones between the Yanshanian granite intrusions and Carboniferous limestone rocks as a skarn type ore deposits. The ore bodies are mostly in lenticular, bedded and irregular vein shapes. Ore minerals are mainly chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena and magnetite. The main textures of the ore are porphyritic, coarse grained, metasomatic, interstitial textures. The main structures of the ore are massive, dense to sparse fine-grained disseminative, honeycomb structures and banded structures.This article discusses in a more comprehensive way on the geological conditions, origin of ore materials, mineralization processes, wall-rock alteration, ore-controlling factors and genesis of the ore deposit, on the basis of understanding of the regional geological background, mine geological features, using the rock and mineral observation and identification methods, applying the geophysical and geochemical analysis methods, combining geophysical and geochemical results with the results from geological exploration by trenches, pits, drills, to study the mineralization laws, indicators for mineral enrichments, high mineral potential areas for further exploration were delineated.Kuohai copper and polymetallic ore deposit has characteristics of the typical skarn deposits; the sulfur isotope analysis indicates its materials are mainly originated from deep igneous rocks. Formation of the mine has experienced three major hydrothermal mineralization periods; accordingly, the mineralization process is divided porphyry, high temperature hydrothermal, medium to low temperature hydrothermal and supergene enrichment periods.It also combined the results of geophysical and geochemical exploration, in comparison with the geological data, delineated two target areas of high mineral potentials and provided theoretical basis for further exploration work in the study area.
