China is a big agricultural country in the world, but it is not a strong one. InNovember, 2001, China became a member of the WTO. This indicates that Chinahas participated in a new-round international competition including agriculture.According to the basic framework of the Agreement on Agriculture reached inUruguay Round, China has made specific commitments on market access, nationalsupport and border measures etc..On the base of studying these commitments and using trade competitivenessindex, this paper analyses quantitatively several agricultural products' (such aswheat, rice, corn, cotton and soybean) trade competitiveness changes and thereasons behind them. Through these analyses, the impact on China's agriculturaldevelopment made by its accession to the WTO is summarized. At last, the paperputs forward several suggestions and measures to improve our agricultural products'trade competitiveness in the world markets which hopefully will make somevaluable contribution to the agricultural development. |
