Study On The Small Town Development Strategy For Suburbs Of Large Cities

In the economic and social perspectives and by using the methods of document review, individual and group interview, questionnaires, the authors reviewed on the process and experiences of small town development in China and systematically analyzed the cases of Small Town Development of Jixian County, Tianjin Municipality. Following findings have been made during the studies: Small towns play important roles in connecting the rural and urban regions. Promoting the small development is a very important instrument for speeding up the integrated rural-urban development; The small town construction has significantly changed the livelihoods of the rural residents, its impacts on urban residents, original rural residents and new settled residents migrated from rural areas are different; Major problems and constraints existing in the small town development process include: (i) Too small scale of urbanization; (ii) limited economic development contribution to the small town development; (iii) lower settlement density; (iv) lack of functional planning for small town development; (v) lack of favorable and effective governmental policy;The authors also recommended relevant indicators for planning the small town development;In addition, recommendations for effectively planning and implementing the Small Town Developmentstrategy have also been made by the authors.
