With the increasing demands of wireless communication and the emergence of mobile multimedia, the requirements future wireless communications needs to achieve a continuous wide-area coverage and to support higher transmission rates. MEVIO technology can improve system performance has been widely recognized, however, in practical applications, due to the size constraints, it is very difficult to install multiple antennas in the single terminal. Inspired by the relay channel, Sendonaris proposed the concept of cooperative diversity. In cooperative diversity techniques, two single antenna user share the antenna of each other, forward the information of each other to achieve multi-user transmit diversity. The basic cooperative protocols include amplify and forward (AF), decode and forward (DF) and coded cooperation (CC), by combining the cooperative diversity and channel coding, coded cooperation can obtain better performance than other protocols.In this paper, we first introduce the technology background of cooperative diversity and the advantage and disadvantage of cooperative diversity.Secondly, this paper described some basic protocols, including amplify and forward (AF) protocol, decode and forward (DF) protocol, selection decode and forward (SDF) protocol and incremental relay (IR) protocol, and analysis the bit error performance and outage probability of these protocols.Thirdly, by adding the orthogonal theory to selection decode and forward protocol, we proposed a new protocol named Orthogonal SDF Cooperation (OSDFC). By combining the thought of incremental relay and coded cooperation, we proposed a new protocol named incremental coded cooperation (ICC). By mean of simulation compare the performance of SDF and OSDFC, CC and ICC.Finally, we introduced distributed space time coding, the advantages and disadvantages of various distributed encoding method and application scene is analyzed in this paper.
