Nowadays, multimedia service over Internet is becoming more and more popular, including various video websites and online video player software. At the same time, in pace with the fast popularization of wireless communication systems, wireless multimedia services become the focus of both academic and industry. Nevertheless, the instability of wireless transmission environment and the sensitivity of the multimedia streaming to the bandwidth variation make the quality of multimedia streaming hard to be guaranteed. Thus, how to enable the video transmitting system to adjust its behaviors according to the varying wireless environment is an important research topic. That is the autonomic issue of wireless video transmitting system. On the other hand, the research about the network autonomic is ongoing. One of such research works is GANA (Generic Autonomic Network Architecture), proposed by EU-China cooperated project EFIPSANS. This architecture specifies the autonomic behaviors in networks and provides a theory foundation of autonomic network engineering. The author analyzes the autonomic requirements of the wireless video transmitting system, and designs an autonomic wireless video transmitting system based on GANA. This system can adjust its behaviors, such as physical transmitting rate and Quantization parameters of video coding, according to the changing wireless environments. This thesis introduces GANA first, including the four network functional planes and the Hierarchical Control Loops (HCL). Autonomic requirements of the wireless video transmitting system are analyzed. Then, such a system is designed using GANA. Furthermore, this system is implemented on NS-2 platform, and its autonomic characters are demonstrated.
