Study On The Formal Model Of Metaphor

The metaphor research has already been a prominent research in linguistics in the last thirty years,and with the cognitive view of metaphor was widely accepted, more and more computational linguists,psychologists, cognitive science researchers and artificial intelligence researchers have joined in the metaphor research. Therefore, building a formal model of metaphor can not only take some new ideas and new methods for linguistics research,but also make a breakthrough in nature language understanding and AI research.Firstly,it review the study history in the thesis,the evolvement of variant school and the study method of cognitive linguistics and computational linguistics.Then it point out that both of them are rank a special position in AI and cognitive science system,and try to overlook the relationship between linguistics,cognitive science and AI from the philosophical point of view,propose the proposition that language is the key of human intelligence.After that,it begin to discuss how to build the formal model of metaphor in the thesis.Firstly, it adopt the result of HNC theory research, take advantage of the HNC concept symbol system as the concept system the study need.Then use the mathematic tool relation algebra to describe image schema, and analyse the mathematic attribute of image schema from the view of relation algebra.Then use the mathematic tool——mapping to build the formal model of metaphor, analyse the process of it, propose the primary frame of image schema abstracting algorithm, target concept domain activating algorithm, source concept searching algorithm and mapping building algorithm. Finally, introduce status quo of metaphor corpus, and give a primary discussion.At the end of the thesis, it discuss about the future research, and focus on the leading edge of linguistics such as neurolinguistics and Conceptual Blending Theory. It expect that the research will get more inspiration from these fields.
