Natural terrain visualization can be expressed visually and truly on the three-dimensional information and surface characteristics with terrain. It has wide application value and potential applications in daily life, scientific research, military operations, economic development and other fields. In military affairs, three-dimensional topography is the main components of virtual natural scenes in a virtual battlefield environment. It has a broad development prospects in military training, operational research, equipment development, and so on. This article is in this context, using the modern technical means, to build a realistic three-dimensional terrain roaming system in the PC platform which can replace the traditional two-dimensional map and a simple physical sand table.In this paper, we focus on key technologies of the three-dimensional terrain visualization. We discuss how to use height relief map based on real terrain data to set up the terrain modeling in OpenGL and VC++ development environment, and how to use the popular simplification algorithm ROAM with levels of detail to rapid simplified multi-resolution terrain mesh models. Also we discuss the treatment of realistic expression, the specific processes and methods of texture mapping achieve. Finally we develop the design and implementation of the system structure and function with HCI(Human-Computer Interaction) roaming technology.This paper focuses on the application requirements of virtual battlefield environment. The paper describes the key technology about the organization of three-dimensional terrain model data, scheduling of resources, real-time rendering algorithm and details generating process. We present the algorithm of simplification ROAM and develop the realistic three-dimensional terrain roaming system. This system has solved some practical application of key technologies. Moreover, this system has high stability, interoperability, and certain practical value.
