IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) technology is. proposed by 3GPP organization to support the IP multi-media and it is considered as a kernal technology of next generation networks. Its distinctive features contains: the adoption of SIP systems, communication without consideration about access methods, the separation between multi-media control and traffic bearer, the separation between call and session, the separation between application and services, the separation between traffice and network. It can also mix the services from mobile network and Internet.For the companies and businesses, especially those with multiple branches of enterprises, the application of IMS technology can supply services from multiple existing networks based on IP network which can save resources for the enterprise. Therefore, the instant messaging and real-time multimedia communication is one of the most important services supplied by NGN (Next Generation Network). SIP protocol is the main protocol seleted by 3GPP standards organization for IMS and it has advantages such as simple structure, easy to expand and achieve, as well as suitable for Internet access. So it will be more consistent with the trend of the future network development.In this paper, the evolution procedure and the development status of IMS and VoIP techology will first be given and at the same time, some brief analyzation is made based on some problems of ordinary IMS desktop soft terminal implementation. Due to the exellent user expression and strong streaming communication ability in Adobe AIR technology, and also because of the mature and stable SIP communication ability in JAIN-SIP, in this paper, a new method to implement IMS multi-media desktop soft terminal is proposed which will combine JAIN-SIP protocal with the basic functions and additional services in Adobe AIR techology. Generally compared with the common IMS desktop soft terminal schemes, the solution in this paper takes remarkable advantages and shows perfect expansibility towards the furture schemes.
