As a new generation of video coding standard, H.264 has high compression ratio, high quality and good network affinity. It is and will be widely used in the future.Due to its high efficient processor, special video processing subsystem and high integrated software structure, DaVinci technology has its own unique advantage in the digital video world. The emerging TI TMS320DM6446 platform has powerful DSP core, optimized coprocessor and plentiful of interface peripherals. Now it is the ideal choose for digital video applications.The thesis will emphasis on the research of H.264 algorithm and its implementation and optimization based on DM6446 platform. The main work of this paper is as below.In the beginning part, the paper presents an overview of the principle of video encoding, the previous video compression standards and evaluation methods. Then the paper focuses on the details of H.264 new features, stream structure and core technologies. The implementation model JM13.2 is introduced at last.Now the intra prediction algorithm is designed for the general video sequence. By analyzing the coding characteristics of HD video sequences, a new and fast intra prediction algorithm is proposed in the following part based on JM13.2 model. Experimental results show that the new algorithm can increases 27.8% on average of the total encoding rate, with a slight increase in bit rate and a negligible SNR drop.In the third part, the paper introduces the common DSP series and the basis of embedded system. Then the paper describes the hardware design and software architecture.As a new generation platform of multimedia processing, DM6446 has its own Codec Engine mechanism. Based on the DaVinci platform, this paper presents the transplant and optimization of X264 algorithm and builds the whole video coding system in the final part.
