Because of their compactness, brightness, and high efficiency, laser diodes have been widely used in engineering application. However, laser diodes have different beam-divergence angles in direction of perpendicular and parallel to the junction plane .Because of the asymmetrical waveguide structure, the complex output field distribution of laser diode resulting from different beam-divergence angles brings many difficulties in practical applications. In this paper, the output field of a laser diode has been expressed as an elliptical Gaussian distribution and the transformation characteristics of laser beams passing through an optical system have been discussed. This paper also analyses the intensity distribution of a laser beam inside the crystal. The main work of the paper is summarized as follows:1) By use of MATLAB, the far-field intensity of high-order mode Gaussian beams is calculated and the corresponding spot shape is also simulated.2) Elliptical Gaussian distribution is used to describe the field distribution of each emitter of LD-bar and LD-stack. By superposing the intensity of each emitter, the corresponding spatial intensity distribution of LD-bar and LD-stack is obtained.3) The transfer properties of laser beams through Nd:YAG crystal using the ray transfer matrix is discussed, analysis of pumping beam intensity in the crystal in shape of cuboid-shaped and rod is made respectively, and the possibility of uniform intensity distribution is discussed.4) The intensity distribution in crystal in the case of laser diodes surrounding pumping laser crystal is calculated.
