With the rapid development of communication technology, Mobile broadband and broadband mobile is the inevitable trend of development of communications network. BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) system is one of the most effective avenues, which is expected to solve "the last-mile" problem that is also titled as the access bottleneck of user's network to core network. At present, BWA system has been one of the most important components of global communication structure. In order to consummate the 802.16 standard and to spread the market, WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) forum, which is established by IEEE802.16 wireless workgroup and world's best-known communication company together, has done a lot of work on the standardization of broadband wireless access architecture. Air interface protocols of WMAN (Wireless Metropolitan Area Network), which support multimedia services, are defined in 802.16 protocols. As a synonym for a new generation of broadband WMAN, world's communication companies have paid much attention to the technology of WiMAX. With the commercial application of WiMAX rapid expansion in the world, the market demand for WiMAX terminals is increasingly high. WiMAX supports a variety of multimedia services, and the connection-oriented mechanism of its MAC layer ensures the QoS of end to end service. For QoS guarantee of 802.16e system,802.16e standard provides the division of service, system QoS framework and the specific signaling interaction mechanism. However, it does not stipulate a specific implementation of the program, which is also the current research focus.The author participated in the project of certain research institution. In the period of study, the author followed up and analyzed IEEE802.16e protocol, and participated in the overall design of MAC layer and implemented the main part of it.In this background, the contents of this thesis are provided as follows:First, based on IEEE802.16e standard, the convergence sub-layer and the common part sub-layer of MAC layer are studied deeply. The focus is on analysis of their group-oriented business functions and QoS idea.Second, relevant functionality modules'division of the MAC-layer is analyzed in-depth, then how to design and implement the modules of the WiMAX system is discussed in detail.Third, a schedule strategy based on traffic class is present. The strategy achieves the equity share of system resource among different services. Consequently, different types of communication can be progressed steadily.Forth, the integration testing is present and the design deficiencies are pointed out. The improved methods and the vision for the future are given at last.
