The optical packet switching(OPS) emerge as one of the first scheme for the next generation switching systems. One of the most critical components in such an all-optical router is the optical buffer, which stores the data packets for a desired amount of time during destined output switch fabric port contention and releases the data packets which the destined output port is cleared. Optical buffer can also be used in optical packet synchronization and traffic shaping. In the dissertation, during I taked part in achieving a novel optical buffer based on the nonlinear polarization rotation(NPR) in SOA, I designed and produced a new type of external drive and temperature control circuit which can be used in SOA. What I have done during the study period are as follows:1. I set up a novel optical buffer based on the nonlinear polarization rotation in SOA by using a new method which to find the principal states of polarizations(PSP) in SOA. The optical buffer can realize "read" operation and "write" operation by using the NPR in SOA. It is simple to control and fast to read and write. The buffer is simple, compact, cost effective, low power consumption and easy to cascade. With the novel design, I had successfully demonstrated the loading and reading operation at bit rate of 2.5Gbps random data was buffered for more than 10 circulations.2. I designed and produced a new peripheral circuits of SOA. This relates to two parts-drive circuit of SOA and temperature control circuit of SOA. In the article I discussed the composition, parameters and functions to achieve of the two circuit boards in detail. Otherwise I analyzed the results of the testing dates. And all the desired results are achieved. This will play a significant role in the solution of key issues in the buffer.
