With the rapid development of wireless networks, new network structures are developed under the consideration of satisfying larger communication requirements. In recent years, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) has achieved much research interest and has got a significant progress in industrialization. It will be one of the next hot spots of future communication systems to integrate WMNs with current PMP (Point to Multi-Point) networks. The characteristic and performance of the PMP/Mesh hybrid network are mainly studied in this paper. On the other hand, it will also be another research hotspot to implement the future networks by utilizing Near Space Communication (NSC) systems. Compared with ground mobile communication systems, NSC has many advantages, such as a better aero-ground radio environment and rapid network deployment.Firstly, this paper analyzes the difference of radio environment between NSC and ground mobile communication systems.Secondly, the structure, characteristics, applications, standardizations and key technologies of the PMP/Mesh hybrid network are discussed. And then based on the 802.16 WiMAX standard, a modified frame structure is proposed for the PMP/Mesh hybrid network. Compared with the traditional PMP network, this PMP/Mesh hybrid network can give a better performance in network coverage, which is testified by simulations.Finally, we develop a static system level model in order to compare the NSC-based PMP/Mesh hybrid network and the PMP network. Simulations results show that the hybrid PMP/Mesh network performs better than the PMP network in network throughput and capacity.
