The next generation of mobile communications will be able to provide a high data transfer rate to support the continuous emergence of new business. The key challenge of mobile communication system is how to achieve high-speed and large-capacity in the limited spectrum resources. MIMO techniques use multiple antennas to increase the channel capacity, improve the reliability, and reduce the error rate. By combining Multi-user detection technology with MIMO, transmission efficiency and the performance of the system can be further enhanced. In this dissertation, the principle of MIMO system and multiuser detection algorithms is first introduced. The optimum detector—ML-MUD is hardly implemented in practice for its exponentially-ranked computational complexity, therefore the detection algorithms are all suboptimal ones which have lower computational complexity but good performance close to the optimum one. Secondly, a multiuser detection algorithm—IGA-MUD(Improved Genetic Algorithm Multi-User Detection)is analyzed. Simulation results show that the performance of IGA-MUD is improved significantly over ZF(Zero Forcing) and MMSE(Minimum Mean Square Error). And, IGA-MUD can achieve a near-optimum performance with significantly lower computational complexity. Finally, an architecture design of the detection algorithm in MIMO system is proposed, which is based on the hardware platform of DSP and FPGA, followed by detailed illustrations of the FPGA design for each function module.
