Digital Video Surveillance Systems, with video, audio and alarm integrated together, are enjoying more and more popularity among customers. Due to the development trend towards digital and intellectual systems, digital video surveillance systems have been leading the technology revolution in the field of defense, as the objective of development. The core of Digital Video Surveillance System is DVR(Digital Video Recoder, DVR). The performance of DVR, which can be categorized as PC-type DVR, and Embedded DVR, has the decisive influence on the entire Digital Video Surveillance System. In this paper, a design of Multi-channel Embedded DVR based on Power PC is provided, and an improvement on PC-DVR has successfully made it more reliable and stabile as a Multi-channel Industrial-Controlled DVR is designed.Since the key technique of image processing is video compression, an appropriate choice of Video Compression Standards is the precondition of any quality improvement in surveillance. Among all the video compression standards, the MPEG-4 standard is universally applied in reality due to its high compression ratio and fitness in net transmission. VW2010 is adopted as the core of both the embedded and Industrial-Controlled DVR image processing models proposed in this paper, with simultaneous coding and decoding of MPEG-4.PowerPC processors have yielded satisfying performance in complicated practical communications field due to its stableness and efficiency, while industrial ones work well in the industrial controlling area. In the Second Section, an embedded DVR hardware platform based on PowerPC with MPC8245 as its core processor is presented. Another DVR hardware platform of the Industrial-Controlled type is introduced in Section Three based on the embedded main board offered by VIA Company. The embedded linuxOS is the ideal partner of Power PC processor. In Section Four, a specific discussion is devoted to the process in search of suitable embedded linux for embedded DVR, and the process of transplantation including the compilation tools build of ppc-linux In Section Five, a VW2010 device driver is designed, and all the discussions on Linux Kernel refer to the version 2.6 Linux Kernel without exception. The performances of Embedded DVR and Industrial-Controlled DVR are evaluated and compared respectively in the last section based on a synthetic test, and they both show excellent performances.
