As a rapidly developed research field in recent years, electronic nose is a cross subject which relates to chemistry, material, sensor, pattern recognition, electronic technology, computer and applied math etc. It whose original inspiration roots in biology includes a chemic sensitive element array, a signal processing system and a pattern recognition system. Electronic nose can overcome the shortcomings such as cross sensitivity existing in measurement in traditional single gas sensor, and identify mixed gases qualitatively and quantitatively. It has a broad application in many industries and fields such as food, medical treatment, the environment measurement, energy sources, chemical industry, traffic, war gas detection and machinery control.The principle,structure,realization and application are researched.we develop an electronic nose system to detect volatile precursor chemicals on the basis of previous research work in the laboratory. The system can detect gas,collect response data,control work process online, and combine several pattern recognition methods to analysis and classify the test data. Finally, a data analysis platform and electronic nose device to detect gas fastly is builded.The paper outlines the emergence and progress of electronic nose ,and its strong applicability around the world; mainly introduces the gas sensor, sensor array and the structure of an electronic nose,including the composition of hardware platform and software platform. Basing on this, we introduce two testing methods of the static and dynamic heating, including the experiment processes and the experiment results,and research the benefits and drawbacks of two testing methods. At last, the improvement of the sensors array structure is introduced briefly. We design a kind of sensor array structure can be composed discretionarily, different software is adopted to design to collect and analyse the data. By comparing the previous experimental results, we find the gas sensors array which was composed of twelve sensors is better.
