The three-dimension visualization technology for large-scale environment has been broadly applied to VR, GIS, military simulation, etc. The real-time rendering of large-scale terrain environment, as an essential part of it, is now a hot research topic widely concerned by scholars from home and abroad. In order to meet the requirements of helicopter unit visual system of marine search and rescue simulator, this paper researches on the real-time rendering technology of large-scale terrain environment. The main work can be summarized as follows:1. The key technology of the real-time rendering of large-scale terrain environment. The data should be properly handled when the large-scale terrain environment is been rendered, it is of great necessity to meet the requirement of real-time rendering. This paper focuses on the blocking, culling, and reviews the relative theory on texture data handling and split elimination of scene model.2. The process to build the model of large-scale terrain environment. To solve the source problem of mass terrain and lifelike texture data, the elevation data and images of Google Earth are put forward and ArcScene is applied to build the terrain scene model, as the viewing point is high in the helicopter unit of maritime simulator and the geometric requirement of terrain scene is relatively low.3. Realization of the real-time rendering of large-scale terrain scene by OSG.In this paper, to some extent, the work lays a foundation to improve helicopter visual system of maritime searching simulator in the next step.
