Radio Frequency Identification, referred to RFID, is a kind of automatic identification technology using radio frequency signals and to obtain information about the target. In recent years, not only target identification can be achieved, real-time tracking and remote real-time control can also be achieved by RFID technology. The accuracy and the rapidity are increasingly recognized by various industries. With the development of society, the requirements of radio frequency identification systems become more sophisticated. So research and development of RFID technology have tremendous economic and social significance. The principle and composition of radio frequency identification system is described in this thesis, as well as developments at home and abroad are analysed; A brief introduction of passive and chipless tags' R&D and their application are showed here; The electromagnetic theory and the microstrip antenna knowledge which correlative to chipless tag are discussed in detail; The paper analyzes the advantages of UWB communications technology, and it presents the idea of ultra-wideband passive and chipless radio frequency identification systems through combining with the traditional radio frequency identification system.Basic research on the algorithms of identification and location for tags are also involved in this thesis. Several recognition algorithms are analyzed in detail and several commonly used localization algorithms are briefly discussed. As the fundamentals of passive and chipless tags, several ultra-wideband antennas are studied and designed in the thesis, and the impedance bandwidths are within the UWB band defined by FCC.This thesis focuses on the passive and chipless tags that are suitable for ultra-wideband passive and chipless radio frequency identification systems. It is verified that the common circular monopole microstrip antenna is not suitable for passive and chipless tag, and fan-shaped antenna tag is feasible. Then, a new antenna tag—arch-shaped antenna tag, which is combined with meandering feeding line, is presented. The desired results are achieved in the CST simulation. Finally, the study of antenna array tag is carried out and good results are also achieved. It can be expected that the number of users could be enlarged by using such kind of tags.
