As the increasing awareness of security for people, video monitoring systems are more and more popular now, many public places like schools, factories, governments are all using video monitoring system. With the development of network, image processing and embedded system technology, there are a lot of improvement in video monitoring technology field. The functions of video monitoring system are enhanced, the single video image monitoring can not satisfy the new requests. The systems with abundant communication protocol, strong control management and intelligent supervise function are becoming hot.Now, there are two types video monitoring system: one is based on DSP, another is based on general microprocessor. The first one is good at signal processing, the ARM's advantagements are system control,management, etc. They can just satisfy the simple requests. It could get a good result if the two types microprocessor work together.This paper analyzed the existing digital signal video monitoring systems firstly, then designed a new video monitoring system using ARM and DSP , which can be upgraded and enlarged easily . This paper chose the S3C2410 ARM9 microprocessor produced by Sumsung and the TMS320DM642 DSP produced by TI as the processors. The ARM microprocessor's responsibilities are video transmission and peripheral control, and the DSP's works are video capturing and video compressing. This paper focus on software. For the hardware, this paper introduced the video capturing circuit and the communication circuit between ARM and DSP. For the software, built the embedded Linux platform on ARM, developed the Host Port Interface (HPI) driver and the server based on real-time transport protocol. For DSP, developed the multitask application programs based on the DSP/BIOS real-time operation system and reference framework RF5, transplanted and optimized the MPEG-4 encoder to the DSP platform, developed the driver for SAA7111 based on the Mini/Classic driver model.The test results show that the video capturing module can capture the image 25 frames per second, the MPEG-4 encoder can compress the video in CIF format 13 frames per second, the ARM can run Linux well, the video server can satisfy the real-time requestment. The video monitoring platform based on ARM and DSP dual-processors will have wide application prospects.
