With the development of image sensors, more and more digital image processing technologies are applied to some fields. It is difficult or impossible to bring all the objects into focus in the same scene. Fortunately it can be solved by image fusion. This technology is benefit to boost the using efficiency of the image information. It can also improve the reliability of the system detecting and recognizing the objects. Because of these merits, image fusion is widely used in these areas such as machine vision, digital camera and object recognition and so on.There are many image fusion algorithms, mainly consisted of the spatial domain and the frequency domain algorithms. After the research on the image fusion method based on the frequency domain, this paper proposed an improved multi-focus image fusion method based on morphological wavelet. The proposed method not only has the predominant local spatial and frequency characteristics, but also reduced the process speed greatly and with no floating-point operation. Meanwhile the fusion quality is good. Essentially, image fusion has the function of image enhancement, so this paper proposed a weak small target enhancement method based on image fusion. Experiment results shows that the small target has been enhanced and the false points have been removed by the proposed method.The main content of this paper includes the following aspects:1 Discussed the basic theory, present state and the applications of the image fusion;2 Researched some common image fusion methods and analyzed them by the experiments;3 Researched evaluation methods of image fusion and analyzed the evaluation indexes by the experiments;4 After the research,analysis and improvement of the multi-focus image fusion methods based on morphological wavelet, this paper proposed a new multi-focus image fusion method based on morphological wavelet;5 After research the basic theory of the objects enhancement, this paper proposed a new weak small target enhancement method based on image fusion;6 Make the summary of the research achievements and shortages of this paper and discussed the direction of the development.
