As the demand of market development, how to obtain higher quality and rapid lower bandwidth transmission of images with less memory have become the main matter of video compression.Therefore, ISO/IEC and ITU-T, two important international standard organizations have formulated H.264, a new generation standard of video compression. Just because H.264 has the new features of good compression performance and network friendly character ,it has become a hot issue in the field of video storage and image communication research.In addition real-time coding of H.264 is an important research direction, and it has very important research significance and practical value in real-time application occasions, especially in mobile video,video meeting ,video telephones and so on.Motion estimation,the key technology of video compression framework, determines the quality and speed of video coding significantly. Thus, developing a fast and efficient algorithm of motion estimation has become a hot point in video compression. How to optimize the motion estimation algorithm to reduce the encoding complexity, is the main content of this paper. This is the starting point ,and the main contents are:Firstly, the importance of digital video coding standards in the technology field and its evolution process were introduced in this paper, then several important video coding standards.Secondly, the common compression technology in video coding was summarized and a general introduction of new technologies ,new solutions and improvement of H.264 were given in this paper. On the basis of previous analysis, this paper has studied several classic motion estimation algorithms with detailed description and analysis, such as the full search algorithm (FS), three-step search algorithm (TSS), diamond search (DS), MVFAST search and UMHexagonS search.Finally, considering the coding characteristics of H.264, an improved fast motion estimation algorithm, Octagon Motion Estimation Algorithm, is proposed, which has researched the key techinical problems of the fast motion estimation algorithm, and referred to some advantages of fast motion estimation algorithm, advanced searching efficiency of coding system, such as searching mode and stratagy of acceleration. It is a hybrid searching method. In the searching process, octagonal pattern, big and small diamond pattern, and square pattern had been combined, at the same time, the adoption of starting point prediction technique avoided falling into local and an early termination strategy, and also cutting down time caused by inaccurate searching. The feasibility of the algorithm has been proved by simulative experiments. This searching algorithm can save a lot of searching time, so that coding time is significantly reduced, without influence to image quality, making up for the shortcoming of low speed in other algorithms.
