MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) and VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group) published H.264, which is a new standard for video compression coding. By adopting a number of novel coding techniques, H.264 has been enhanced compression performance and provision of a"network-friendly"video representation addressing"conversational"(video telephony) and"non-conversational"(storage, broadcast, or streaming) application relative to existing standards.H.264 leads to higher computational complexity at the encoder mainly due to the variable-block-size motion estimation, which also leads to higher computational complexity. This is mainly due to the fact that the H.264 encoder employs more complicated approaches and features to efficiently improve the coding performance. Movement estimate is the key technology of video compression, which dominates the performance of compression and the time for calculating. So it is mainly studied to search a brief fast efficient algorithm of movement estimate for video coding. In this thesis, first we discuss the key technique in video coding standard: motion estimation. By analyzing those available firstly, we research on the movement estimate algorithm in video coding standard, summarize the technology points, and compare their performance after Simulation for classic algorithm, then we proposes an improving algorithm on that basis, which based on the IDS algorithm and MPMVFAST algorithm. The improving algorithm auto-adapted advance block matching search, which using Small Diamond Search Pattern (SDSP) and Hexagon (HSP and VSP) combination Pattern auto-adapted advance block matching search, which plot out the type of movement using the time and space correlation of the sequence image, and also carry through the initial search point prediction. Experiments results show that proposed algorithm could obtain good PSNR performance and also improved the search speed, and cut the search time, and reduced the motion search points. At last, the thesis paid attention to the new arithmetic medium processor DM642 as the hardware platform of the company of TI and realized the core algorithm of H.264 on DSP.
