Wireless mesh network (WMN) is a kind of new broadband wireless net framework of which the multi-hop environment is formed by peer-to-peer backbone nodes. The distance of single hop wireless link is comparatively short, but high utilization of bandwidth, low demand for the transmitting power of nodes can be achieved and thus the construction cost is fairly low. Due to the features different from the traditional wireless network, WMN possesses a lot advantage in aspects of robustness, flexible networking, the expansion of net work coverage and the reduction of prophase investment, and it is especially suitable for the broad wireless to access the backbone net. Currently, WMN is becoming a focus in the academic field and engineering field and a hotspot technology in the world. We can be sure that WMN will be a significant part of the internet technology of the next generation. In WMN the MAC protocol and routing protocol are very important.Firstly, this paper analyzes the existing MAC protocol and routing protocol in WMN, and focuses on the channel allocation strategy,routing discovery and routing metric. The paper summarizes the deficiencies of the existing MAC protocol and routing protocol, based on which the author points out the problems to be solved for the improvement of MAC protocol and routing protocol.Secondly, aiming at these problems existing in traditional MAC protocol, this paper puts forward an improved MAC protocol to ameliorate the establishment model of connection and the channel allocation strategy. Connecting the neighbors by 4-way handshake, each node maintains the channel usage of its own and its neighbors, transmits and broadcasts the information when the connection is established. These methods can enhance utilization of channels and avoid collisions.Finally, this paper puts forward a kind of routing mechanism. By combining the tree based-routing discovery and on-demand route discovery, the delay caused by the routing discovery is effectively reduced. In addition, according to the singleness of classical ETX metric, a Multi-metric QIL is put forward based on EIX. Together with link quality, node loading balance and interference of links, QIL metric can markedly increase the network throughput.This paper makes some study in the improvement of MAC protocol and routing protocol in WMN, which provides some new ideas and methods to enhance the source utilization of WMN and the network throughput.
