With the development of information industry, software is used more and more widely. Therefore, clients now have much higher expectation on software quality and development cost. Facing the rapid changing needs, software corporations should be able to offer quick responses to gain a good share of the market. As a main assistant tool in software design, UML modeling tool is able to completely cover various needs in software design and effectively accomplish the work. Currently UML modeling tool is not used widely enough in domestic software companies, due to the lack of good and low-cost UML modeling tool. Moreover, research of modeling tool here is not thorough. In order to solve these problems, a scheme of UML modeling tool that is fully functional, lightweight, less-resource-consuming, and with friendly user interface is proposed based on deep analysis on the great needs of software designers. The scheme has seriously considered how to reduce the cost of modeling tool development. It has described the whole architecture of the modeling tool based on the UML specification and analyzed the hierarchy of this architecture. Additionally, key technologies used in this scheme have been discussed. This thesis has learnt the advantages of other commercial modeling tools and avoided those disadvantages. It has paid much attention to the agility of the scheme. In order to accommodate to the rapidly developing needs of clients, clear interfaces for future funcationalities have been provided. A prototype of the scheme has been implemented and functionalities of the prototype have been tested thoroughly. By comparing this prototype with other commercial modeling tools, results showing this scheme is more efficient are obtained. Finally, problems exsiting in current scheme have been discussed.
