In the early 1990's,the successful researching of erbium-doped fiber amplifier and the application of wavelength division multiplexing technology greatly increased the transmission capacity of optical fiber communications,and extend the transmission distance of optical fiber communications.These milestones give birth to a rapid development of optical fiber communication.How to make use of existing fiber-optic transmission network to meet growing capacity needs of optical fiber communication has become an important subject of research in the field.Therefore,the research of enhancing the capacity of optical fiber communication began to move to more advanced and more efficient erbium-doped fiber amplifier.Low-loss window of silica fiber is 1450~1650nm,but C-band EDFA and L-band EDFA only covers the scope of 1530~1610nm.one of the effective ways to use the bandwidth and to improve the system capacity is the development of S-band optical fiber amplifier. This paper introduce the history of erbium-doped fiber amplifier and the research progress of foreign and domestic scientist.and analyse the main advantage and disadvantage of several existing optical amplifier structure.Then this papaer thoroughly research Giles model and S-band erbium-doped and S-band fiber amplifier design.The main work includes:1.Show a comprehensive analysis of erbium-doped fiber amplifier operating principle and structure characteristics.Established simulation model program of EDFA numerical analysis which is based on Giles model.It used for researching ASE of EDFA characteristics.2.Show a comparation and analysis of different structure of S-band EDFA which is based on Giles.Analyze and summarize S-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier design rules which is based on genetic algorithm optimization method.3.Established simulation program of transient model and show the analysis and research of S-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier transient characteristics.
