Today, applications software have been made up of millions of code lines, particularly in the large distributed applications, it is also facing more and more complex environment of hardware and software, fault-tolerant has become a key factor in the reliability of the system. The workflow applications have been successful in the office automation and enterprise applications, but as the basis support software, workflow platform is also faced with the complex issue of fault-tolerant.The paper presents a new method of distributed workflow platform made up of workflow definition tool, web middleware and workflow engine, and introduces the overall design ideas and implements technology of workflow engine-the core component of the workflow platform. In addition, to improve the dependability of workflow engine, the paper presents the multi-level filtering software fault-tolerant solution based on message queuing, combined use of hardware fault-tolerant technology and the optimization strategy of system deployment. Systematic fault-tolerant solutions of hardware and software greatly enhance the dependability of workflow platform. The best balance of system overhead and the fault-tolerant ability is found through the actual production data analysis, monitoring and repeatedly adjust. Satisfactory results have been achieved in practice.In this paper, fault-tolerant is thinking through the entire software lifecycle, include requirement analysis, design, deployment, monitoring, optimization and upgrading. The results of research are helpful to further explore the fault-tolerant systems and team development model in the actual engineering environment.
