Based on geological prospecting data, this paper imitated the 3D structure and spatial patterns of the geological objects (such as stratigraphy, rock, etc.) by the Real 3D Visualization, which realized through computer technology and graphical theory and methods. As an emerging subject to provide decision support for geological prospecting, it makes correlation analysis on geological space features and the internal characteristics convenient. Supported by the"863 Project", this paper focuses on the methods of founding 3D model ,key technology, procedures and method of the real 3D visualization of the geological objects . This paper has made a software that been used to realized real 3D visualization. Finally, this paper has also been applied to the practices of "Zhuhai Jiuzhou Port-Hong Kong cargo terminal relocation" and "Zhijiadi silver mining area ", and has proven effective.This paper proceeds with the concept and status of 3D Visualization, analyzes the current technologies and methods of 3D Visualization, such as surface rendering and volume rendering technology. Based on the 3D models of geological objects , this paper designs and develops the VTK-based 3D display software of geological objects, achieves a Real 3D display , slitting display, drilling simulation, contour surface mapping and the display or query functions for geological properties of the geological objects and so on. This paper research on the specific application of VTK in the geological field such the "863" project—"City and 3D shallow geological prospecting geological imaging technology" as an example.Since the application of VTK is still in its infancy stage, the volume rendering technique is an effective method to realized the real 3D visualization of geological objects, and it's also a focus in the field of geological 3D Visualization. This paper discussed and practiced the real 3D visualization of geological objects, which realized by programming methods combined with volume rendering and VTK. Therefore, applying VTK volume rendering technology to geological 3D Visualization can provide a new approach and idea for the method of 3D Visualization in the geographic field and the development of the 3D software.
