Sensor is a device which can sense specified quantity to be measured and translate it into useful signal according to a certain degree of regularity. While sensors are becoming more sensitive, exquisite, adaptable and intellectual, the fiber optic sensor, which is the new one in sensor family, is becoming more popular, due to its superior performance. In a variety of classification of fiber optic sensors, the fiber optic sensors based on interferometer have the highest sensitivity. In this paper, a fiber optical sensor system based on a Mach-Zehnder (M-Z) interferometer loop is introduced. This system can achieve long distance, totally distributed interference detection through technologies such as spectrum analysis. This sensor system includes four parts: optical board system, polarization control system, data process system and graphical user interfaces (GUI). Optical board system is mainly used for generating and receiving optical signal. Optical board will be discussed in this paper.First of all, this paper discussed all the noise in the optical receiver unit. The noise performance of regular receiver, balanced receiver and auto-balanced receiver are analyzed. Then the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of these three types of receivers are compared and analyzed by MATLAB.Secondly, electric schematic diagram of auto-balanced receiver was designed. Then this diagram was analyzed with simulation software Multisim2001, and its performance turned out to be perfect. The PCB of auto-balanced receiver unit was then designed.
