Emerging applications such as wireless surveillance systems, video sensor networks and mobile cameras among others, lead to urgent need of the low complexity video coding study. Adapting to these requirements, Distributed Video Coding (DVC) attracts many research efforts. DVC is a new coding paradigm based on two major information theory results: the distributed lossless coding of Slepian-Wolf and lossy coding with decoder side information of Wyner-Ziv Theorems. A particular case of distributed video coding is the Wyner-Ziv video coding, as lossy coding with decoder side information, making exploiting the redundancy existing in a video sequence at the decoder comes true. Thus, independent encoding can proceed in encoder, combined decoding in decoder. So complexity transferring from encoder to decoder being true satisfied the new applications. This thesis mainly researchs the code rate control and side information estimation of Distributed Video Coding. First, the whole developing history of DVC is introduced in this thesis. Then the background and basic theories of Wyner-Ziv is studied, and it has mainly completed three aspects of the work as follows: Firstly, the principle and project design of Low-Density Parity-Check Accumulate Codes (LDPCA) are introduced with comparing to some other rate-adaptive schemes. The performance verified by simulation is also included in this thesis. Secondly, a lot of researches have been done to aim at the side information estimation. In order to optimize the RD performance of DVC by improving the quality of side information, based on the introduction of basic way to interpolation the side information, improved strategies has been researched to optimize the side information, and one strategy is proposed to improve the performance. The quality verified by simulation through different video sequences. Finally, LDPCA coding applied in a pixel domain Wyner-Ziv codec. Through using multilevel coding method and rebuilding the decoder side information, the quality of the pictures has been improved, and the video compression has achieved a good result.
