For the 3D (three-dimensional) rendering technology, the research of textures rendering technology on how to simulate and reproduce objects with a variety of visual characteristics is always a constant search for a topic in the study of computer art.The textures of gem are different from well-known conventional type of textures, just like wood, metal, glass, and so on. It has the unique features on visual characteristics about color, transparency and luster. At present, the research of textures of gem usually aimed at the transparency. And the research always is a variety of algorithms and making with software. Now there have no specific research reports on the other of visual characteristics about gem.Now taking a panoramic view of the current research results to transparency, most is based on the research of the algorithm about to simulate the principle of light produced by the transparency objects and the application of the 3S (Sub-Surface Scattering) rendering. However, due to the complexity of this type of light model, such results have shortcoming about slowly rendering because of complexly and large calculation. Also such results have shortcoming about rendering with long time because of trying numerous parameters repeatedly.At the same time, in the eyes of the most of designers the texture of gem is still a great concept. In fact, there are many types of gem such as Nephrite, Jadeite and Agate. Different types of gem still have large difference in color, transparency, luster, and other visual characteristic. In the past, rendering these different types of gem always is simply by changing the colors.As one of the representative of the Chinese nation's traditional culture, gem is bound to become a major category of the types of textures by discussing and researching, when the technology of rending in of China has developed, and more and more works about traditional culture increased. Therefore, the research is meaningful. The research is visual analysis combined with 3D rendering technology on the textures of gem, in particular the different types of gem using art theory. In view of this, this paper analyzes the unique visual characteristics of the gem and the different types of gem, as well as the subtle differences on visual characteristics. We advanced methods in rendering by the computer and the reasonable when using these methods.In this paper, the research focuses and main achievements of this thesis are as follow:1. We analyze the unique visual characteristics of the different gem texture, through the comparatives of gem textures and other objects textures, and the comparatives of different gem texture such as Nephrite, Jadeite and Agate.2. Analyzing the HSV color model theory, we test colors settings parameters of different textures gem and determine a reasonable range of settings.3. Analyzing the light model of textures of gem, we design a method in rendering textures with subsurface-scattering reference to the using of the "depth map shadows". This method avoids the complexly light model, and it just considers the performance of visual effects. We test settings parameters of different textures gem and determine a reasonable range of settings.4. Comparing the unique visual characteristics on luster in different gem texture such as Nephrite, Jadeite, Agate, we advance exhibiting luster by using high-performance optical properties. We test settings parameters and determine a reasonable range of settings.5. In accordance with the results of the theoretical analysis and rendering test, we summarize systematically the unique visual characteristics of the gem and the different types of gem, and rendering successfully. The advantage of this method is fast and easily understanding and setting. They advance a new method to render gem textures. The results determine a reasonable range of settings. The results combine art theory with 3D rendering technology, and provide valuable reference for the workers'study on the textures of gem.
