Simulation of natural phenomena has always been one of the most difficult tasks in computer graphics. Simulating natural phenomena, such as smoke, cloud, rain, snow and so on, has been widely used in 3D animation, computer game, movie production and advertising. This paper mainly studies particle system approachs and proposes a falling snow algorithmic structure for particle system application, incorporating the object-oriented computer program language. By choosing properly particle models and particle quantities, the algorithm produces realistic visual effect and meets the need of the realtime processing of visual scene. This paper dedicate to the research on the simulation of snowscape.First the definition and character of snowscape are introduced, and then a survey of some existing algorithms of snowscape simulation is presented. On the premise of visual realism of snowscape and realtime implementation,an algorithm for simulating realtime snowscape based on particle system is proposed, the snowscape generated by which can be applied to virtual scene in games, movies and TV programs. On the basis of the structure and the analysis of falling snow, with OpenGL, I succeeded in making the dynamic simulating of falling snow objects. The results of experimentation have proved that this method is more effective in the representation of snows in virtual scene.
