In this thesis, the applications of conformal Phtonic Band-gap (PBG) structures on the cylindrical microstrip antennas are studied and the cylindrical microstrip antennas with conformal PBG structures are designed and fabricated. The main works and results are as follows:1. The basic theories of PBG structures and single microstrip patch antenna are studied. Then the radiation characteristic, feed mode and impedance matching of the single microstrip patch antenna are analyzed.2. The X-band cylindrical single microstrip patch antenna is designed and the influences of cylindrical curvature on the harmonic frequency of antenna are discussed. Then the application of PBG structures on the single microstrip antenna is presented in detail. The influences of changing the slotted mark-space ratio of PBG on the antenna characteristic are discussed and the simulation results indicate that the PBG structure can reduce the influences of the cylindrical curvature.3. The designment of the impedance matching network is studied based on the principle of microstrip antenna array. The cylindrical microstrip antenna array with PBG structure is designed, which is compared with the conventional microstrip antenna array.4. The cylindrical antenna with both conformal PBG substrate and covers is designed. Still the simulation results indicate that the medium covers take good advantages of the gain, directivity and efficiency of the antenna. In allusion to the development of fabrication techniques about cylindrical conformal microstrip antennas, the improvement approaches of the antennas we desired are proposed.
