With the development of Computer Graphics, Virtual Reality Technology is becoming the focus of the research gradually. 3D face modeling technology, which is an important component of the Virtual Reality Technology, has been used in many fields more and more widely. Now this technology has been used in film production, game entertainment, computer-aid medical treatment, culture communication, computer-aid teaching, criminal scene investigation, long-distance conference and visual telephone etc.Comparing with the face modeling, the researches on the entire head modeling are less now. This thesis proposed an approach to the construction of 3D human head models using an improved generic face model(Candide-3) and two 2D orthogonal human head images. The process of modeling can be divided into four steps. Step 1, preprocessing on the 2D images; step 2, importing the generic head model; step 3, transforming the generic model to the individual model; step 4, texture mapping by using cylindrical projection. The research work have been done in this thesis are listed below.(1) Research on the Candide-3 model. First, by analyzing the position of the every point and triangle in the model, we improve the Candide-3 model. The improved model, which covers the whole human head(including the side and back of head, even the teeth), can be used in the 3D head modeling, not in the face modeling. Second, research on the Shape Unit defined in the Candide-3 model, which can be used in the matching process from generic head model to special head model.(2) An iterative triangular subdivision algorithm has been proposed. In order to make the wire-frame model smooth, the algorithm is used to subdivide the triangles of the model.(3) Research on the iterative fusing algorithm based on n*n wave-low-pass filter. This algorithm is used in the generation of the no-joint texture image. Besides, we use the cylindrical projection algorithm to map the texture image onto the wire-frame model.The innovation of our research is constructing 3D human head model by an improved generic face model(Candide-3) and some 2D human head images. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach is effective to produce realistic 3D head models.
