Along with the development of embedded system and network technologies, it is possible and necessary to implement smart and networking applications on embedded devices for the purpose of information-sharing. The cooperation between embedded systems and internet technologies will promise a broad prospect.Web Service is predicted to one of the most popular techniques in last decades. Web service offers a platform-independent communication mechanism and is usually used to meet the demand of integration and exchange data between heterogeneous systems. Embedded devices can provide some services for other network users or visit vast resources with low system cost in web services way. Domestic and foreign research institutions have not put forward complete and mature solutions for embedded web services, since it is still a relatively new research subject. Although the prospect of embedded web services is attractive, the restrictions of embedded systems, including limited resources, low processing ability, will make it hard to use the technologies directly into embedded system. On the basis of well understanding on the respective characteristics of embedded system and web services, the paper thoroughly discussed the necessity of introducing web service to embedded system and its technical feasibility. Under the premise of comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of embedded web services, three design rules for low end embedded web services were proposed. According to four different application circumstances of embedded web services, the paper proposed the corresponding software application models. Furthermore, the paper clarified and classified application scope of embedded web services and made the expectation of its potential applications. At the end of the paper, an application which an embedded device request a DNS service was implemented to illustrate the development process of embedded web service. The hardware of the system was made up of a PC server and an embedded client. The design and deployment of DNS service was implemented on the server-side. The code implement of client-side includes the transplantation of IAR PowerPac operating system and TCP / IP protocol stack on the NXP LPC2468 hardware platform and development of DNS client application program. The paper constructed various generic web service models for low-end embedded systems.
