Optical performance monitoring is essential for managing optical networks. One important quantity to monitor is the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). In this thesis, we investigate an OSNR monitoring using receiving electrical beat noise , First we reviewed several OSNR monitoring techniques and explored the OSNR monitoring technique using electrical beat noise measurement at the low frequencies where no signal is present. Then we explore and simulated an OSNR monitoring technique using uncorrelated signal-spontaneous electrical beat noise.OSNR can then be monitored by analyzing this beat noise and we carried out an experiment in a 10 Gb/s system to verify the proposed OSNR monitoring technique using electrical beat noise. Then, we experimentally demonstrate an OSNR monitoring technique using electrical beat noise for optical packet switched networks which performs monitoring on a packet basis. A CW portion in the payload is gated for OSNR monitoring. |
