Along with the advent of information age, the role of information technology gets more and more important in the daily life of people. Optical fiber communication develops rapidly since the invention of ruby laser by T. H. Maiman and the creative work of C. K. Kao in 1960s.In recent years, as the traffic transfers from voice to data, the demand on bandwidth increases progressively. Various technologies emerge continually in order to satisfy this kind of increasing demand. The use of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) dramatically increased the capacity of long-haul transmission systems. Optical cross connect (OXC) and optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) make it possible to construct wavelength routed WDM network based on point-to-point WDM link. However, it is essentially circuit switching and, therefore, not very suitable for carry the data traffic. Thus, optical packet switching (OPS) is proposed, which is highly efficient, highly flexible, scalable, transparent to data rate and data format, configurable and capable of carrying increasing data traffic. In history, SDH optical transmission network experienced the following several stages: point-to-point system, self-heal ring and mesh network with the basis of DXC. Similarly, after experiencing WDM point-to-point system, WDM self-heal ring and mesh network based on OXC, the WDM Optical network will evolve into optical packet switched network (OPS) finally. This dissertation examines some key technologies of OPS.In Chapter 1, a brief introduction of OPS is made. In addition, the content of this dissertation is also listed briefly here.OPS node is a key unit in optical packet switched network, and its performance highly affects that of an optical packet switched network. Through theoretical and numerical analysis, the performance of OPS node is investigated. With the establishment of a queuing model, the delay performance of an optical packet switch fabric based on WD/SD is given for the first time in Chapter2. In Chapter 3, the crosstalk performance of a BANYAN switch fabric based on 1x2 acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) is described and theoretical analyzed.Network performance is of great importance for an OPS network. In Chapter 4, a new approximate way to analyze the delay performance of an optical packet switched star network is proposed. With theoretical and numerical analysis, the relationship between the delay performance of an OPS star network and the volume of optical buffers is given for the first time.We conclude in Chapter 5.
