For the e-commerce sites, the environment is more and more competitive. In order to attract more customers to patronize the site, its primary purpose is to make sure that users can find resources smoothly. One of the most important factors is the users' understanding of the web information organization system. We regard the navigation, classification and retrieval system on the web interface as a symbol system, which the builders use to display the various relations of the information resources belonging to the site. The user's retrieval behavior on the site is actually a cognitive process of information research, including understanding of symbols on the web interface and the mastering what the symbols refer to. This paper focus on the process that how the users understand the symbols on the web interface and the impact of cognitive context.Firstly, this paper reviews related concepts, including linguistics, semeiology and cognitive psychology, focusing on symbols, words, meaning, concept and the relationship between them. Secondly, from the perspective of information processing science, the paper tries to sum up how people get a general idea of the web interface symbols system. And then, the paper analysis the process of information transmission for e-commerce sites and users' retrieval behavior when using the classification symbol system of web interface. Finally, the paper organizes two experiments, which are called free association of vocabulary and classification using experiment, to study how users understanding their needs and category names and the effect of cognitive context.
