The Research On Image Mosaic In Firearm Identification

Image mosaic is the technology that a larger field of view, seamless and high-resolution image, which providing more information than one image can, is made from a set of images. The automatic creation of panoramic images with more details, attractiong tremendous attention from researchers to commercial practitioners, is an active area of research in fields of computer graphics and computer vision.The sharpness distribution of the image is affected by various factors, such as: the focal length of sensor. In forensic examinations, due to the limit of microscope and the unsmoothed surface of the firing pin, we can not obtain a whole clear image of the cartridge bottom at a fixed focus distance. The part focused by the microscope and the parts with the same distance from the microscope as the focused part appear to be the sharpest in the image. The sharpness of the parts out of focus decreases gradually in the image. The problem is that we can not generate an image of all parts of cartridge with equal clarity, one way to enhance the image is to acquire several images of a cartridge with focus on different parts of it and then stitching them in such a way that all regions of the image are in focus.In this paper, we obtain image that contains more information by applying SIFT feature, Homographic Model, Histogram Matching to mosaic image. Experiments show our mosaic approach is good at cartridge images mosaic. We also present evaluation to demonstrate the performance of our method in both objective and visual evaluations.
