S-MAC protocol presented according to the energy requirement and self-organization of sensor network can achieve low duty cycle through periodical sleep. But the fixed duty cycle of S-MAC fails to adapt to the change of network traffic very well. So the thesis designs a mechanism of dynamic duty cycle which can adjust duty cycle in time with less energy consumption compared with S-MAC because the mechanism allows several data packets to be sent during one work period, saving the overhead of synchronous frame.The paper carries on the implementation of the improved MAC protocol under NS platform, designs a simulation verification experiment and finally analyzes energy consumption performance according to the data extracted from tracing files which are dealt with by a kind of programming language of AWK. The result shows that the improved MAC protocol has better performance in terms of energy in contrast with S-MAC, which has a practical value for the further research on communication protocol of network.
