The global telecom operators are all transforming into comprehensive information provider. Transformation is a revolutionary change for telecom network. At the same time, Internet technology bloom spreads an intensive network technology transformation, which leading traditional telecom network, Internet and multimedia network transformation and integration process. WiMAX(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) network be regarded as a new innovation from Internet to Wireless broadband technology.The telecom manufacturers must supply enhanced, value-added and competitive product continually for fierce telecom market. The balance between cost and product speed be gotten by manufacturers also. The traditional telecom equipment based on large rack composed of cards is enclosed, private and vertical, designed for single service, which structure is quite complex and is very expensive. With the micro-electronics and IC technology development, Cluster system composed of several servers is not only with a high cost performance but also with well expansibility.The WiMAX ASN GW (Access Service Network Gateway) is designed from cluster, which composed of several PC servers. The high availability of telecom equipment must reaches 99.999%, as high reliability is the characteristic of telecom service. System reliability and maintainability make up availability. However, the reliability of PC server cannot meet telecom standard,so the purpose of this paper is how to enhance the maintainability of each component and make the availability of whole Gateway system reach telecom standard.First, this paper analyses the popular fault tolerance technology: designing disk mirroring on single PC. Switch stack and network mirroring cluster technology etc. Design and accomplish heartbeat based on IP multicast in Gateway cluster. Full consider single points of failure, database and service failover, network etc. Add the lowest cost to farthest reduces the probability of failures and cut down the time of maintain in order to increase the availability of several server system. Then, exercise Markov process to analyze the system availability, found the frame of dependability and mathematic model, quantitative analysis the availability of the whole system is well qualified the telecom application standard.Additional, introduce the redundancy test of several servers in cluster in detail. Analyze the test data by two different views and get the precision of heartbeat.In the last, the high availability WiMAX ASN GW has been applied in global six telecom operators. ASN GW is running robustly proved by data collected from the six WiMAX commercial networks.This paper proposes a new solution of high availability design for telecom equipment. The main contribution is below:(1) The cluster system based on PC technology, which is opened and cycle used. Componentization pushes telecom network more opened. Operators can create solution from each functional products based on market, business and customer service. Several different form networks can communicate each other benefit from the standard of each component.(2) Enhance product competitive forces. The commercial product be used can get the benefit from low material cost as large numbers of manufacturing. By replacing telecom equipment with computer system not only cuts the research and development cost of hardware, but also mitigates risk from self development. By the way, enhance corporation competitive forces.
