Although high-qualified tree simulation could be realized by the application of Computer Graphics at present, bark texture simulation still needs further research in order to describe more texture details. It is a tough job to simulate abundant details on the bark's surface and the progressively-variant transition effects across different locations on the trunk. In this paper we present a method for synthesizing realistic bark textures. The method adopts the idea of patch-based sampling strategy, and can generate a whole piece of trunk according to some bark texture samples. Meanwhile, it also lifts the burden of collecting the whole bark texture by hand. Our method can be divided into two steps. The first step is "horizontal synthesis" and the second step is "vertical synthesis". The bark textures generated by the first step can efficiently avoid the seam problem which would be caused by ordinary texture mapping approach. On the second step, this paper also provides a map that can control the synthesis probability to help realize the progressively-variant transition effects for the purpose of further reality of the bark texture simulation. This kind of map can efficiently synthesize bark textures with different texture features and bark materials so as to successfully simulate the progressively-variant transition effects between the old parts of bark to the tender parts.During the synthesis procedure, we also take into consideration of scar effects simulation for enriching the bark details. By using scar samples and utilizing edge melting method, we can add scars on the bark texture so as to satisfy the need of realistic tree representation.
