Highway alignments hold an important position in the highway design. It not only decides the projection costs and maintenance costs, but also has great relationship with the road safety. Majority of the traditional highway alignments are made by artificially, it has many subjective defects, and long-term linear design enables the designers work with experience, lack of innovations. With the popularity of computer technology and the rapid development of optimization techniques, designing the road alignment with computer is possible. In this paper, according to the present situation of highway alignment and the trends of optimization technology development, to resolve the issues above, the author launched the study on the intelligent highway alignments decision.From the connotation of intelligent highway alignments decision, the author choosed genetic algorithms as the optimization technology, which has distinctive characteristics. Using geographic information systems (GIS) as the platform, from two situations ---without control points and with control points, the horizontal alignment optimized on a given area. The author summarized the basic principle, the characteristic of genetic algorithms and the key realization technology of it, and according to the characteristic of highway alignments, he determined the parameters and operations in the genetic algorithms and the process of that. He made data processing of the system and a genetic algorithm interface to GIS platform, and performed the programs.In this paper, there are two innovations: first, the author designed the adaptability function in genetic algorithm by himself; second, in alignment optimization process, he added the control points for the first time in the study field, and it made intelligent highway alignments decision more close to the reality.Through the verification of data, the system can satisfied the requirements of horizontal alignment optimization, and has practical value.
